ok, how's everyone.

just a few question b/c i want to move to linux.

My system specs:
p4 2.8gig - " WILL LINUX PERFORM OUSTANDING W/ A P4 "
200gig western digital hdd - " WILL LINUX SEE PAST THE 137GIG BARRIED THAT IS SO HARD FOR WIN TO DO "
GeforceFX 5200 video Card - " DISPLAY & MOVIES ETC, WILL THEY PLAY WELL "
512mb ddr - " DOES LINUX HAVE PROBLEMS WITH DDR MEMORY "
Nec Dvd Burner - " CAN I RIP & BURN DVD W/ LINUX & IF SO WHAT SOFTWARE WILL I NEED "
Acer Cd Burner - " CAN I BURN MUSIC AS WELL AS CREATE PLAYLIST FROM CD W/ LINUX & IF SO WHAT SOFTWARE WILL I NEED "

i am considering Mandrake 9.1 since i've read that so many of you have had problems w/ Mandrake 9.2. i also would like to know about d/l Mandrake, meaning what is i586?

So any advice or tips for make the switching easier, and also i dont plan on dual booting am going full.

>> 512mb ddr - " DOES LINUX HAVE PROBLEMS WITH DDR MEMORY "<<

no probs there

>> 200gig western digital hdd - " WILL LINUX SEE PAST THE 137GIG BARRIED THAT IS SO HARD FOR WIN TO DO "<<

with which file system? in general, no. linux will not have a problem.

>> GeforceFX 5200 video Card - " DISPLAY & MOVIES ETC, WILL THEY PLAY WELL "<<

nvidia cards generally perform well in linux. most video cards perfoms well in linux.

>> p4 2.8gig - " WILL LINUX PERFORM OUSTANDING W/ A P4 "<<

about as well, if not better than windows (and thats with out tweaking it).

>> Acer Cd Burner - " CAN I BURN MUSIC AS WELL AS CREATE PLAYLIST FROM CD W/ LINUX & IF SO WHAT SOFTWARE WILL I NEED "<<

easily.

>> Nec Dvd Burner - " CAN I RIP & BURN DVD W/ LINUX & IF SO WHAT SOFTWARE WILL I NEED "<<

never actually done this one, since i dont have a dvd burner, but i know linux has dvd burning tools, and its incorperated with most of the cd front end software.

your computer is i686 or higher. i would get the i586 version. performance will be better.

Hi J,

I'll dp my bnes tto answer your questions.

p4 2.8gig - " WILL LINUX PERFORM OUSTANDING W/ A P4 "

Yes, should be great.

200gig western digital hdd - " WILL LINUX SEE PAST THE 137GIG BARRIED THAT IS SO HARD FOR WIN TO DO "

Should be fine, I've creatabnily set up a RAID 5 with well over 200GB with no problem, but not sure about on one drive. I have seen 200GB drives in an XP Pro system okay.

GeforceFX 5200 video Card - " DISPLAY & MOVIES ETC, WILL THEY PLAY WELL "

Yes.

512mb ddr - " DOES LINUX HAVE PROBLEMS WITH DDR MEMORY "

Yes.

Yes, to both and there are several alernatives you can use. K3B is great and will do both for you.

i am considering Mandrake 9.1 -

If you download the 9.2.1 version should get over the problems that were with 9.2 If you runnnig an intel P4 you need the i586 version.

Hope this helps.

Neil.

Jayy,

you wont find 9.2.1 per se'. you will find this though.

Mandrake92-cd1-inst.i586.iso 667620 KB 11/07/2024 06:43:00 PM
Mandrake92-cd2-ext.i586.iso 714646 KB 11/07/2024 08:51:00 PM
Mandrake92-cd3-i18n.i586.iso 711864 KB 11/07/2024 10:20:00 PM

this is straight from the mandrake site. these would be ok, since they were updated with the "fix". also you should note that none of your hardware is relavent to the problem that was faced in the original release. so either way your fine. the original release had problems with LG cdroms. you have an ACER. http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3

if you any other questions, dont hesitate to ask.

The Nvidia card might require you to get the commercial drivers off of the nvidia website for 3d/opengl hardware acceleration. I don't remember if Mandrake includes them with the distro, however installing them is actually pretty simple with the directions.
For the 200 gig hard drive I have no idea if this much will work as a single partition. I'm using a 120 gig standard ext3 partition and that seems to work quite well (except the occasional scheduled disk check by fsck takes forever!) If such a large partition didn't work its a relatively simple process to divide it up into multiple partitions. This would also prevent total data loss if one partition somehow got irretrevably corrupted.
I've never had any problems with any of my pcs under about 12 different distros all of which have ddr memory and one of which is a p4.
As for dvd burning and ripping, it is possible under Linux although not always easy. K3B is a great all-purpose burning tool for cds and doing the actual burning process for dvds but if you want to create a video dvd it might take some work. The problem lies in the fact that there are ways to create the special file system for dvd players but the best tools available are all commandline (like dvdauthor for the file structure and transcode for converting movies to the proper mpeg format) which as you can imagine makes creating a dvd a headache. Some nice gui tools are being worked on now though as frontends for these like avidemux2 for transcode and dvdstyler for dvdauthor. I only wish there were one tool that could take your avi or divx files and let you make a dvd out of them. For some other linux video tools you can check out http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tools?section=23#23
If you do go with Mandrake be sure to check out the Penguin Liberation Front (plf.zarb.org), they provide the binary packages for a lot of these tools that Mandrake doesn't include for legal reasons. And btw the i586 in all the mandrake downloads refers to the processor it is compiled for, meaning it'll work on anything higher than a 586 or close equivalent (so your 686 p4 is fine). This is important if you're looking for other packages, you don't want to get something compiled for an apple!

Just looked at my previous post where I said

>>512mb ddr - " DOES LINUX HAVE PROBLEMS WITH DDR MEMORY "

>>Yes

that should have been no - I was typing yes to the other questions amd just carried on :) It was late here and I was tired.

Anyway if you use the updated 9.2 you should get the NVIDIA drivers first, as you will need them. The link is:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html - Use the Linux IA32 version. Not 100% sure which one you'll need, either the graphics one or the nForce. Best get both to be sure. If you do find yourself without a GUI when you first boot up. Don't panic :) You can still browse the web and stuff. Login as root. If you do an "urpmi links" without the quotes, it will install a text browser. Should prompt you for ome of the CDs. Just type "links" to start and then press the ESC key. Should them see a menu at the top of the screen. Press "F" adn then select "Go to URL" and type in the address to go to. Takes a bit of getting used to, but you can go to all sites, just won't see any images and need to use only the keyboard with tabbing, etc to move around the screen. This way you should still be able to get to download any extra needed stuff or read any help stuff on the Mandrake site or post here for more help.

Again not 100% sure, but think you will also need the kernel source to install the NVIDIA drivers. As root, just type "urpmi kernel-source" and it should install the source for you. Then do the NVIDIA install. Once the drivers are installed, logout of root and login as a user you created and type "startx". The gui should now appear.

Neil.

FYI, You can also try Mandrake 10 Community which just came out. It apparently uses the new 2.6 kernel and KDE 3.2 (which is a big upgrade). It's available for download from Mandrake if you're a club member but I suspect if you hunt around you can probably find it download elsewhere for free.
