PC silicon vendor Via Technologies is holding a contest that encourages "girls" of any age (over 18) to hone their gaming skills at a world-class gaming facility in Sweden, where they'll be treated to some high-powered gaming training with Via's "girlz 0f destruction" gaming ambassadors.

What's the contest all about? Actually, you don't enter yourself, you enter a friend.

"To qualify, we want you to tell us why your 18 years old or older girl/female/sister/mom/ niece/grandmother/great great grandmother should have the experience of living the pro gamer lifestyle for one weekend," says Via marketing manager Eliane Hofmann.

"To ensure that she enjoys her Chromey weekend in Stockholm the lucky winner is allowed to bring along a friend (also female over the age of 18) free of charge," Hofmann adds. "They'll both stay in the Home of Chrome, have a chance to learn how to play like a pro with the girlz of destruction and have a second day shopping in downtown Stockholm. We'll pay their transportation costs. They'll have all the fun and send you a cheap postcard or the famous lousy t-shirt."

Hofmann said, "The Home of Chrome benefits a lot of professional gamers and promotes the industry, but we wanted reach out to those who might never have had this kind of experience. Everyone who loves gaming knows someone who they'd like to share that experience with, and what better way than during a free weekend holiday in Sweden with real pro gamers."

Who are the girlz 0f destruction, and what's the Home of Chrome?

The girlz 0f destruction is an expert PC gaming team made up of seven girls from seven different countries. The team is "widely regarded as the highest level professional female QUAKE 4 players," Via says. They train for roughly five hours per day, have played some 10,000 matches in total, and last year collectively earned more than $30,000 (USD) in winnings. Preferring to use gaming systems based on Via chipsets and S3 Graphics Chrome S27 graphics cards, the girlz 0f destruction is Via's official "Via Chrome Ambassadors," according to Via.

As part of their ambassadorial role for Chrome, the team is invited to live in the Via-sponsored Home of Chrome, "a six-bedroom house with a LAN room for gaming stocked with VIA and S3 Graphics Chrome products," located in Stockholm, Sweden. The home serves as a "24/7 eSports training facility," according to Via, which, among other benefits, offers the advantage of Sweden's excellent broadband connectivity, and the resulting "ultra low ping rates crucial for online gaming."

How to enter

The "Get the Girls into the Game" contest runs between now and September 10. To enter a girl in the contest, gamers are asked to submit nominations at the Home of Chrome website. Submissions include answering a few questions and suggesting why the nominated girl deserves the trip to the Home of Chrome, Via says.

"Entries will be judged on the basis of humor, originality, and genuine gaming need by a panel composed of Via staff and girlz 0f destruction team members," Via says.

The prize weekend at the Home of Chrome will take place Friday through Sunday, September 22 through 24, 2006.
