VectorLinux v5.8 boasts multimedia plugins, DVD playback |
Dec. 27, 2006
The VectorLinux team last week released version 5.8 of its Slackware 11.0-based distribution, which includes a 2.6.18 kernel and the XFce desktop environment. The release features fully-working browser plugins -- including Flash 9, Java, mp3, Real and Windows media -- as well as DVD playback, the team said.
"VectorLinux 5.8 Standard, code named 'Santa' (Merry Christmas!) ... is the fruit that has resulted from several months of coding, debugging and testing by the core development team and the VectorLinux community," the Canada-based team said in the release announcement.
"This release follows our legendary tradition of stability (inherited from Slackware 11.0), blazing speed on even modest hardware, and simplicity of design and function."
Additional new features, as listed by the team, include: - fully customized Xfce 4.3.99.2 window manager
- SeaMonkey 1.0.6 application suite
- Firefox 2.0 browser
- Opera 9.10 browser
- GIMP 2.2.13 and Xara LX graphics editors
- Abiword and Gnumeric for office tasks
Vector Linux is touted as a relatively small, fast, Intel-based Linux operating system for PCs. According to the project, the distribution offers casual users a fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities ranging from web surfing, to sending and receiving email, to chatting on ICQ or IRC, to running an ftp server. For power users all the tools are provided for compiling programs, or for using the system as a server or gateway for home or office networks.
You can download VectorLinux for free through the team's download site, here. The distribution's 551 MB iso is available for download here (direct link to iso image).
