| Foresight Linux sneaks up on v1.0 |
Sep. 14, 2006
Chief maintainer Ken Van Dine announced the release of Foresight Linux 0.9.8, which uses a 2.6.17.8 kernel and sports the new GNOME 2.16 desktop. The distro comes as either a single DVD or double CD iso download.
"[We're] still on the path to Foresight Linux 1.0," Van Dine said in the Sept. 8 release announcement. "We want to do some more testing, but what we have is pretty close to what 1.0 will be."
Here are a few of the highlights of the latest release, according to the project team: - GNOME 2.16 desktop
- Conary 1.1.3 package management
- rPath Appliance Agent 1.0.4
- X.Org 7.1.1 window manager
- Evolution 2.8.0 email client
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.3
- Mono 1.1.16.1 to run .NET client/server apps
"Our bleeding edge stuff will be cooked onto foresight.rpath.org@fl:1-devel, and shadowed to @fl:1 when it is ready for widespread consumption. We will always strive to stay incredibly current," Van Dine said.
Foresight is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution based on rPath Linux (and its Conary package management). It showcases the latest work from the GNOME project, and includes a number of "innovative" software packages -- such as Beagle, Zeroconf, and Mono -- together with a "clean default theme and artwork," according to the Foresight project.
The Foresight Linux 0.9.8 DVD image (1.1GB) is available for free download directly from this url (links to iso image file). The double CD iso download can be found here.
