| SimplyMEPIS 8.0 ready for Lenny |
Feb. 09, 2009
MEPIS Founder Warren Woodford wrote to let us know that the third release candidate for SimplyMEPIS 8.0 is now available for download. Woodford notes, "MEPIS 8.0 is in good shape, but I'd prefer to declare it final when Debian Lenny is released."
MEPIS is one of several popular Linux distributions based on Debian. Others include Ubuntu, MINT, and Xandros. (For a time, MEPIS was based on Ubuntu, but switched back to Debian with the 6.0 release a couple of years ago.)
The long delayed Lenny release of Debian is likely to launch on Valentine's Day. After that, SimplyMEPIS 8.0 will be released in final form, Woodford suggests.
As Linux distributions go, MEPIS aims to be better polished than most, and easier to use, especially for users migrating from other OSes. Woodford describes it as "easier than Vista, and intuitive for XP and Win98 users."
He adds, "SimplyMEPIS includes all of the applications that most users need and want. [It] is designed to replace or work side by side with Vista or XP on PCs and OSX on Apple computers." A recent -- and glowing -- review of SimplyMEPIS can be found here.
New in the RC3 release are:- 2.6.27.15 kernel
- Qemu 0.9.1+svn, libvirt 0.6., virt-manager 0.6.1, and virtinst 0.400.1
- Firefox 3.0.6-1
- openoffice 3.0.0-5
- libgphoto2 2.4.3-1 updates
Additionally, community members have improved the MEPIS Network Assistant, the MEPIS Manual, and have added an autorun Intro to MEPIS to the CD, Woodford says.
RC3 can be downloaded immediately, and upgraded in place once Lenny is finally released. Downloads are available for 32- and 64-bit processors. The release is available as an ISO image from the 'testing' subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site, and at MEPIS public mirrors, Woodford reports. More details can be found here.
