| "Keep it simple" CRUX Linux rolls latest rev |
Mar. 22, 2007
The Sweden-based CRUX project team this week announced the release of CRUX 2.3, an independent, lightweight, i686-optimized Linux distribution designed for advanced Linux users. The latest version features a 2.6.20.3 kernel and the WMaker desktop environment.
CRUX made its debut in October 2001 and issued its last distribution release, v2.2, 11 months ago. Its primary focus, according to the project's home page, is "to keep it simple, which is reflected in a straightforward tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization new Linux features and recent tools and libraries."
"CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications," the project adds. Another unique attribute of CRUX is that it "was built from scratch and has never been based on any other Linux distribution."
Key new features in the v2.3 release, according to the project, include:- glibc 2.5 and GCC 4.1.2;
- the monolithic x11 package has been replaced by the new modular X.Org 7.2 distribution; as of this update, crux.nu now hosts a dedicated "xorg" ports repository, installed by default;
- the netkit-base port has been replaced by inetd and iana-etc;
- iproute2 and iputils are now included in the core collection
Additionally, the new default network script /etc/rc.d/net has been updated to use /sbin/ip instead of the traditional ifconfig and route commands (still available and installed by default), the team said.
Standard CRUX features, as reported by the team, include:- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- Firefox 2.0.0.2 browser
- GAIM 1.5.0 instant messenger
- MPlayer 1.0rc1 media player
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 email client
- Vim 7.0 text editor
The 244 MB CRUX 2.3 ISO image can be downloaded from the main project site, here. Alternatively, the 244 MB iso image file for i686 machines is available for download here via BitTorrent.
