New MEPIS Beta Arrives |
Dec. 22, 2006
MEPIS LLC today announced that Beta1 of SimplyMEPIS-32 Version 6.0-4, aka SystemUpdate1, is currently available for download by MEPIS "subscribers" and is working its way onto public mirrors. Earlier versions of this KDE-based Linux desktop distribution have been well received by users.
In an email to DesktopLinux.com, MEPIS founder and chief maintainer Warren Woodford stated, "Over the past two weeks, most of the changes have been available in the MEPIS dev-32 pool. MEPIS testers have been hard at work trying out the packages. With their help, this will be the best SimplyMEPIS-32 ever."
This version continues to offer advanced hardware auto-detection, multimedia integration, and an easy to use installer. This update also includes Firefox 2.0; the latest updates of other packages; and a rock solid, security patched 2.6.15 Linux kernel with support for the newest sound chips and Intel-powered Macs.
The ISO image is available for download in the "testing" subdirectory at the MEPIS Subscriber's Site and at MEPIS public mirrors. At this time, the beta has not made it to all the mirrors.
"Satisfied users are encouraged to make a contribution or make a purchase at the MEPIS store," Woodford suggests. "Your support helps offset the costs of producing SimplyMEPIS 6.0 and funds further development of MEPIS Linux."
The current development cycle at MEPIS is on a "fast-track schedule," according to Woodford. The developers hope to have the latest version of this Ubuntu-based distribution out on Jan. 10, 2007, he adds.
