| Puppy 2.13 features full set of kernel drivers |
Jan. 03, 2007
Distro founder and chief maintainer Barry Kauler on Tuesday announced the release of Puppy Linux 2.13, featuring a 2.6.18 kernel and the GNOME desktop environment. The build also includes "the complete suite of kernel drivers," according to Kauler.
More compact builds with "a subset of the full driver suite and different selections of applications will follow soon," Kauler said.
New features and fixes, according to Kauler, include:- NdisWrapper upgraded to v1.33
- Soxgui, a great little front-end for SoX and FFmpeg, which can perform various operations on audio files, including file format conversion
- Geany text editor upgraded to v0.10
- Isomaster ISO file editor tool upgraded to v0.6
- SeaMonkey communication suite upgraded to v1.0.6
Standard features include:- GIMP 2.2.11 graphics editor
- Firefox 1.5.0.3 browser
- GAIM 1.5.0 instant messenger
- OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 office suite
Despite Puppy's small footprint, it is a full-featured Linux distribution that boots into a 64MB ramdisk. Because the entire OS runs from RAM -- unlike "live CD" distributions that continually read data from the CD -- all applications start quickly and respond to user input "instantly," according to the Puppy Linux project.
Puppy Linux has the ability to boot from a flash card or any USB memory device, CD-ROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disk, or internal hard drive. It can also use a multisession formatted CD-R/DVD-R to save everything back to the CD/DVD -- with no hard drive required at all.
