Nov. 04, 2005
The Open Source Development Lab (OSDL), which employs Linux creator Linus Torvalds and strives to be the "center of gravity" for Linux, is preparing to aggressively move its Desktop Linux Initiative forward. Architects from over 20 key desktop-oriented Linux projects will gather Dec. 1-2 at the OSDL's Portland, Ore. headquarters to set strategic directions and standards, and find synergies amongst Desktop Linux organizations, the OSDL says.
The meeting, which comes hot on the heels of the Desktop Linux Working Group's recent Linux client survey, will focus on analyzing Linux desktop deployment case studies, and discussing technical and architectural strategies to help accelerate world-wide adoption of Linux as a desktop platform.
Specific scheduled topics include: - Desktop market segments -- past, present, future
- Desktop Session
- Graphics Session
- Desktop Tools Session
- Desktop Applications Session
- Linux Client Deployment Case Studies
- Desktop Testing Session
- Desktop Standards Session
- Open Printing
- Open Desktop Session
- Addressing Gaps with Coordinated Efforts
All of the major desktop organizations will be represented, ranging from Gnome.org and KDE.org, to LinuxBase.org and Oasis-Open.org, to Mozilla.org and OpenOffice.org, to name but a few.
Last month, the Free Standards Group and its Linux Standard Base work group announced the formation of the Linux Standard Base Desktop Project, with the support of Adobe Systems Inc., Intel Corp., IBM, Hewlett-Packard Co., Linspire Inc., Mandriva SA, Novell Inc., RealNetworks Inc., Red Hat Inc., Trolltech, Xandros Inc., and others.
