The GoblinX Linux project has released version 1.1 of its GoblinX LiveCD Linux distribution, with a "lot of improvements and new stuff, and also new themes for a better visual desktop," the group says. The most significant improvement in the latest release comes from upgrading to a 2.6.10 Linux kernel, as well as from the inclusion of UnionFS, SquashFS, and Busybox, "a trio that allows more speed and better compression."
GoblinX is a bootable live CD distribution based on Slackware Linux, with the primary goal of creating "a more pleasant and functional desktop [by] standardizing all icons and themes to make it easy for novice users to learn about available applications," according to the project.
Version 1.1 of GoblinX now contains five window managers -- KDE, Xfce, Fluxbox, WindowMaker, Enlightenment; and it supports five different languages -- English, Portuguese, German, French, and Spanish -- which are selected via a "cheatcode" at the boot prompt. It also includes more programs and games, the group says, as well as an improved kdialog installation program for use in installing the OS on a hard drive.
Key application software changes include:
Packages included -- Fluxbox, Enlightenment, Firefox, Qiv, Aterm, Gcalctool, Gedit, Dnsmasq, Wireless-tools, Mdadm, Idesk, Xchat, and Gdm.
Games included -- Battle for Wesnoth, Chromium, LBreakout2, Xgalaga, Starfighter, Flobopuyo, Kpat, Kmahjongg, Kreversi, and Kmines.
Packages removed -- Mozilla, Transcode, and Ovlfs.
The version 1.1 release could be "a bit more unstable" due to these modifications, the project cautions. Related stories:
