| PCLinuxOS gets its own website |
Jan. 26, 2006
PCLinuxOS, a three-year-old LiveCD desktop Linux distribution that originated as a fork of Mandrake, now has its own website. PCLinuxOS.com went live earlier this week. "We now have a home of our own, thanks to the support from donations received last month," distro founder "Texstar" wrote.
PCLinuxOS incorporates a KDE desktop and can work together with a USB key (or thumbdrive) to save configuration and personal data, making it a "LiveMove" distribution as well, according to the project's website.
PCLinuxOS is also designed to be installed to a local hard drive for a more permanent (and faster) configuration. Once installed locally, PCLinuxOS software updates are accomplished by means of the Synaptic package manager, which provides a GUI front-end to APT (Advanced Packaging Tool), a package management system derived from Debian Linux. Using Synaptic, users can easily download new and updated software from an online PCLinuxOS-specific repository (and numerous mirrors).
The latest version of PCLinuxOS is version .92, released last November. Version .92 is based on a 2.6.12 Linux kernel and includes xorg version 6.9 cfs, KDE 3.4.3, Koffice instead of the previously included OpenOffice suite, Thunderbird 1.0.7, Firefox 1.0.7, and "much more." OpenOffice 2.0 can be added to hard drive installations, using the Synaptic package manager.
Background
According to the project's website, the precursor to PCLinuxOS was a set of RPM packages prepared specifically to improve successive versions of Mandrake (now Mandriva) Linux. The packages were created by Texstar, who, from 2000 to 2003, maintained the Mandrake-enhancement RPM repository in parallel with the website, PCLinuxOnline.
In 2003, Texstar created a fork of Mandrake Linux 9.2 (which was released in October 2003). Working closely with The LiveCD Project, Texstar later evolved that fork into the PCLinuxOS distribution.
