Reviewer casts a wary eye on Gentoo Linux |
Sep. 20, 2006
Those of you who've been wondering about Gentoo Linux might want to take a peek at a new article by an old hand at evaluating operating systems.
"Gentoo is a Linux distribution unlike any other I have used, not just in terms of how it does things, but in the philosophy which drives its design," writes longtime Linux writer/analyst Joe Barr.
"Gentoo doesn't ask what it can do to make things easier, it asks you exactly what it is that you want it to do, and then does precisely and only that. I gave Gentoo a good try, but I won't be sticking with it. Why not? I'm glad you asked."
Barr wasn't impressed with the installation process Gentoo employs, to say the least. He has a laundry list of other comments, too.
"Gentoo is a popular, powerful, well-crafted distribution that panders to your geek side to the nth degree. You want control? Gentoo hands you the reins and wishes you good luck," he writes.
Gentoo enthusiasts may not like all of this talk.

In case Barr's criticism hasn't deterred you -- or has piqued your interest in Gentoo -- you can download Gentoo Linux 2006.1 from the distro's bouncer system, here, or via BitTorrent, here. Screenshots, courtesy of OSDir.com, are available here.
