| Ibex inspires GNOME switch |
Nov. 07, 2008
Long-time KDE fan Rick Lehrbaum reports switching to GNOME after accidentally downloading the "wrong" version of Ubuntu. In a detailed blog post, Lehrbaum describes evaluating, installing, configuring, and testing Ubuntu 8.10, aka "Intrepid Ibex," along with why it inspired him to make the switch to GNOME.
Lehrbaum's blog post has lots of useful information for those evaluating various desktop Linux distributions of their own. For example, he describes in brief:
- Using VirtualBox to evaluate live CD images without rebooting
- Backing up system and personal configurations before OS reinstallation
- GNOME UI set-up tips for a cleaner, simpler single-panel look
- Adding software
- Editing desktop launcher files to show a "busy" cursor during launch
At the end of his tests, Lehrbaum finds himself surprisingly impressed with GNOME, which he long eschewed in favor of KDE. He writes, "Ubuntu 8.10 is the best-performing Linux distribution I've ever used -- from the perspective of functionality, usability, and aesthetics. And, much to my surprise, I’m really liking GNOME!"
