| Knoppix goes gold with v5 liveCD |

Klaus Knopper and his Knoppix team announced the first public release of the Knoppix 5 live CD and DVD on June 2. The Debian-based distribution, which requires no installation of software on the user's hard disk, features a 2.6.17-rc kernel and KDE as the default desktop.
"At CeBIT 2006, a preview of Knoppix 5 was introduced, which has now been updated with the new kernel and udev hotplug management," the Germany-based Knopper said in the release announcement.
What's new in this release, as listed by the project team: - X.Org Version 7.0
- detection of onboard IDE raid controllers and raid disk components
- udev + hwsetup for automatic hardware detection
- KDE 3.5.2
- GNOME 2.12 from Debian unstable
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.2
- transparent write access for NTFS partitions
- a new Knoppix installer -- now also with the option to update existing installations of Knoppix

- Abiword 2.4.4 word processor
- amaroK 1.3.9 mdia player
- Evolution 2.6.1 email client

Knoppix is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices, and other peripherals. Knoppix can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos, the team said.
