Foreseeing GNOME with the latest Foresight Linux
Oct. 06, 2006

Foresight Linux, the distribution for those who like living on GNOME's cutting edge, has just been updated. One of the distro's lead developers, Antonio Meireles, announced this week that the latest Foresight 0.9.8.2 is now available.

The release includes "the usual bug fixes and package updates, including the latest stable gnome (2.16.1) package set and an the latest Google Earth release, a revamped X.org subsystem and a new default kernel (2.16.18)," according to Meireles.

This release follows on the heels of September's arrival of Foresight Linux 0.98, which Meireles described as "our biggest and greatest release ever."

Foresight is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution based on rPath Linux (and its Conary package management). It showcases the latest work from the GNOME project, and includes a number of "innovative" software packages -- such as Beagle, Zeroconf, and Mono -- together with a "clean default theme and artwork," according to the Foresight project.

This week's v0.9.8.2 release also includes AIGLX (Accelerated Indirect GLX) by default. AIGLX is a Fedora and X.org project that's designed to enable GL-accelerated effects on a standard X-based desktop. It includes a lightly modified X server; an updated Mesa, a 3D graphics library; and a modified version of Metacity, the default GNOME window manager.

This cutting-edge Linux desktop also includes support for Beryl, which provides 3D and transparency for Foresight Linux. According to Meireles, this feature "will work out of the boxes for NVIDIA users, and users of Intel [open source software] drivers" after the appropriate Beryl updates. ATI and other graphics card users will have stability problems with Beryl, however.

Other key features of the latest Foresight Linux release include:
  • Beagle -- desktop search tool
  • f-spot -- personal photo management
  • Banshee -- music management and playback
  • Avahi -- implementation of Zeroconf networking
  • Hal -- hardware abstraction layer
  • Conary -- RPath's package management
  • OpenOffice -- suite of productivity applications
  • Mono -- .NET implementation for Linux
Foresight Linux CD and DVD ISO images are available for download, here. The distribution currently only supports x86 systems.
