Clustering distro ParallelKnoppix goes gold with v2.4 |
Mar. 05, 2007
The Spain-based project team for ParallelKnoppix, a remastered live CD edition of Debian/Knoppix that allows the clustering of machines for parallel processing, has released v2.4 of the distro. It features a 2.6.20.1 kernel and the KDE default desktop environment.
ParallelKnoppix is a good way to create a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster, the project website says. The distribution enables parallel processing using the LAM-MPI and/or MPICH implementations of MPI (message-passing interface), a team spokesperson said. Getting the cluster up and running takes less than 15 minutes, if the machines have PXE network cards, he added.
"This has paravirtualization support -- kvm compiled in for both Intel and AMD, and QEMU with the kqemu kernel module (a big thanks for the GPL release)," the team member said. "There's also a rom-o-matic boot ROM at /cdrom/kvm-pxe.iso. I'd like to get a virtual compute node running on top of PK using one of the virtualization platforms, for demonstration purposes and pure cool factor."
Since the distro is designed for developers or network administrators, it does not contain desktop productivity tools, such as OpenOffice.org, GIMP or even .
Key development tools, according to the team, include:- Berkeley DB 4.4.20 database
- Perl 5.8.8
- Module-init-tools 3.3-pre4 (for loading kernel modules)
- Python 2.44
- qt-x11 3.3.7 (for writing C++ GUI apps)
- gtk+ 1.2.10 (toolkit for creating GUIs)
You can download the distribution's 520 MB iso image from the main site mirrors here, or from here (direct link to iso).
Finally, BitTorrent clients can download ParallelKnoppix 2.4 from this site.
