| Zenwalk goes gold with v4.4 |
Feb. 27, 2007
The Zenwalk project has announced the release of Zenwalk Linux 4.4. The "mini" Linux distribution utilizes a 2.6.20 kernel, and is one of the first distros to incorporate the new Xfce 4.4 desktop, which came out on Feb. 7, according to project team manager Jean-Philippe Guillemin.
"Everything has been polished in many ways," said Guillemin. "The automount system has been enhanced to detect and handle more CD/DVD devices, including dynamic mountpoints management. Fusesmbtool has been updated and can now be launched from the Thunar file manager on any folder in order to browse network shares."
In addition, Zenwalk 4.4 introduces the hotname system, Guillemin added. "With a few mouse clicks, you can rename any USB mounted device to your preferred 'nice' name," he said.
Zenwalk 4.4 takes advantage of a new printing system, gutenprint, which replaces the unsupported gimp-print, and now uses CUPS 1.2 series printer service (1.2.7), according to Guillemin.
Applications bundled in ZenWalk v4.4 include:- MPlayer 1.0rc1 media player
- Firefox 2.0.0.1 browser
- Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 email client
- GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
- GNOME Office
- GNUmeric 1.7.6 spreadsheet editor
Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack) is a Slackware-based GNU/Linux operating system that aims to be slim and fast by using only one application per task and with a focus on graphical desktop and multimedia usage, the project website says.
Zenwalk's modular approach also provides a simple way for developers to convert Zenwalk Linux into a finely-tuned modern server (e.g. LAMP, messaging, file sharing).
