rPath Linux updates features, installer
May 17, 2025

The rPath Linux project team this week announced updated release 1.0.6 of its rPath series, based on the groundbreaking Conary software management system. rPath Version 1.0.6 of the Xen-oriented distribution features a 2.6.19.7 kernel, along with the GNOME 2.12 desktop environment.

The new images incorporate updates to the installation process and all package updates released as of May 11, team spokesman Michael K. Johnson said in the release announcement.

Key new features, according to Johnson, are:
  • 2.6.19.7 Linux kernel, which enables installation on more recent hardware not supported by previous installation media
  • x86_64 VMware and Xen, as well as x86 and x86_64 ESX
  • Conary 1.1.24.1
  • GCC 3.4.4
  • Glibc 2.3.6
  • Xorg-X11 6.8.2 windowing manager
Standard features, as listed by the project team, include these updates:
  • Firefox 2.0.0.3 browser
  • Pidgin (formerly GAIM) 2.0 beta 6 messenger
  • GIMP 2.3.15 graphics editor
  • SendMail 8.14.1 mail transport agent
The rPath Linux project's mission is to provide system software that is easily tailored to suit unique application needs. rPath is not only a distribution in its own right, but also a base technology intended to enable users to create purpose-built operating system images using the rBuilder Online technology. The project says its Conary distributed software management system is designed to automate many of the tasks that have made it difficult to build Linux distributions.

You can download one of the many CD or DVD ISO image choices at the main download page here.

The 32-bit Xen domU image contains two kernels, the team said. One supports older Xen dom0 hosts with kernels that do not include PAE support, and the other supports newer Xen dom0 hosts that do include PAE support. For more information on Xen domU support, refer to the Xen domU Guide.

Alternatively, the 1.4GB DVD ISO image for x86 machines can be downloaded here (direct link to ISO). Likewise, the DVD ISO image for x86_64 machines (1.5GB) can be found here (direct link to ISO).
