Sabayon Linux v3.3 CD edition debuts
Mar. 27, 2007

The Italy-based project team for Sabayon Linux -- whose name refers to a light, airy, custard-like dessert -- released its v3.3 miniEdition distribution this week, featuring a 2.6.20 kernel and KDE desktop. Sabayon Linux miniEdition is a CD version of the latest Sabayon Linux x86/x86-64 DVD, a team member said.

Sabayon Linux is designed to transform a computer into a Gentoo Linux system in less than five minutes, according to the project team. Besides functioning as a live CD or DVD, Sabayon Linux can also be installed on a hard disk, acting effectively as an easy-to-use Gentoo installation disk.

Despite reducing the size of Sabayon Linux from what was contained in the DVD version to what could be crammed onto a single CD, the multimedia features of the full DVD version were kept intact in the v3.3 Sabayon Linux miniEdition distribution, according to the team.

Key new features in Sabayon miniEdition v3.3, as listed by the Sabayon Linux team, include:
  • K3B updated to 1.0
  • Added VIA OpenChrome GFX drivers
  • Updated gpu-detector to the work accordingly to the new feature listed above
  • Updated to Beryl 0.2.0
  • Updated IVTV driver to 0.10.0
  • Updated rt2500 driver to 20070323 CVS snapshot
  • Updated ndiswrapper to 1.39
  • Binary packages now supported through a simple binhost
Standard Sabayon Linux features, as listed by the team, include:
  • GIMP 2.3.14 graphics editor
  • GAIM 2.0.0beta6 messenger
  • OpenOffice.org 2.1.0 office suite
  • Thunderbird 1.5.0.9 email client
  • amaroK 1.4.5 media player
