SAM Linux 2007 targets older, underpowered PCs
Mar. 22, 2007

SAM Linux 2007, a light-weight PCLinuxOS-based live/installation CD featuring the Xfce 4.4 desktop and a 2.6.18.6 kernel, was released for free download today. SAM 2007 is positioned as a complete desktop environment that is suitable for older hardware.

According to the project team, "To run SAM all you need is at least 128MB of RAM and a 300MHz CPU. Lesser is possible (down to 64MB RAM with a existing swap partition), but not recommended."

SAM Linux 2007 comes with support for more than 20 languages, includes Beryl and Xgl support, and contains a complete home desktop with office, Internet, games, multimedia, graphics, system, security, and rescue software, the team said. It also sports "nice additions, like WINE, Flash 9, Java, and RealPlayer," the team said.

It is possible to boot SAM Linux 2007 from a USB thumb drive in conjunction with using the CD as start medium, according to the project's website. The user's "home" folder gets stored on the USB flash device.

Key new features, according to the team, include:
  • OpenOffice.org 2.2 RC1; also supports GNOME Office
  • Added Gparted, root-kit-hunter, redo-mbr, Dayplanner, Glabels, Chestnut Dialer, PyNeighbourhood, Streamtuner, RealPlayer, and FLPhoto
  • Added LiveUSB mode and mkusbhome
  • GAIM 2.0.0beta6 instant messenger
  • GIMP 2.3.10 graphics editor
  • Mplayer 1.0 RC1 music player
  • Firefox 2.0.0.2 browser
Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 email client was removed from this new edition.
