Foresight Linux 1.0 goes gold |
Jan. 30, 2007
Project maintainer Ken VanDine on Jan. 28 announced the release of Foresight Linux 1.0, the first stable release of the rPath-based desktop Linux distribution after nearly two years of development. It sports a new 2.6.19.2 kernel and the GNOME desktop environment.
"Foresight Linux is a desktop-focused Linux system that just works," VanDine said in the release announcement. "Our mission is to provide a truly useful desktop system that is friendly for the novice user, as well as flexible for the power user."
Foresight comes with the following updated features, according to the project team:- GIMP 2.3.13 image editor
- Firefox 2.0.0.1 browser
- GAIM 2.0.0beta6 messenger
- OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 office suite
- PostgreSQL 8.1.4 database
"Great attention has been paid to making things simple and integrated," VanDine said. "For example, NetworkManager makes it simple to connect to wireless access points. Foresight System Manager handles keeping your system updated."
Foresight Linux features the latest software from the GNOME project and includes a number of innovative software packages -- such as Beagle, Zeroconf, and Mono -- together with a "clean default theme and artwork," according to the project team.
This new release also includes AIGLX (Accelerated Indirect GLX) by default. AIGLX is a Fedora and X.org project that's designed to enable GL-accelerated effects on a standard X-based desktop. It includes a lightly modified X server; an updated Mesa, a 3D graphics library; and a modified version of Metacity, the default GNOME window manager.
This cutting-edge Linux desktop also includes support for Beryl, which provides 3D and transparency for Foresight Linux.
Other key features of the latest Foresight Linux release include: - Beagle -- desktop search tool
- f-spot -- personal photo management
- Banshee -- media player
- Avahi -- implementation of Zeroconf networking
- Hal -- hardware abstraction layer
- Conary -- RPath's package management
- Mono -- .NET implementation for Linux
"I am also pleased to announce some enhancements to our website, specifically our new forum," VanDine said. "Many people have requested a forum in the past. So let's all help make it a success. You can find it [here]. We are also evaluating wiki systems, so stay tuned."
